Start to the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona: the 2024 edition will be mostly focused on the use of AI to innovate mobile networks and make them more performant and sustainable. On the inaugural day, the AI-Ran Alliance was launched, an initiative promoted by industry leaders together with research institutes and universities, aimed at exploiting the potential of technology to increase the competitiveness of mobile telecommunications.
The founding members of the alliance are Amazon Web Services, Arm, DeepSig, Ericsson, Microsoft Nokia, Northeastern University, Nvidia, Samsung Electronics, SoftBank and T-Mobile. The mission of the AI-Ran Alliance. The alliance aims to contribute to the efficiency of mobile networks, while ensuring the reduction of energy consumption and the modernization of existing infrastructure. Actions that prepare the ground for new economic opportunities generated by AI, 5G and 6G.
Three main areas of research:
- AI for Ran: Increase Ran capacity and improve spectral efficiency through artificial intelligence;
- AI and Ran: Integrate AI and Ran processes to use infrastructure more effectively and generate new revenue opportunities driven by technology 4.0;
- AI on the Ran: Deploy AI services at the edge of the network via the Ran to increase operational efficiency and deliver new benefits to mobile users.
Network operators will lead the testing and implementation of these technologies, developed thanks to research that universities will carry out together with leading companies in the sector.
Bees to unlock the potential of 5G
Meanwhile, the GSMA has revealed that 47 mobile operators have signed up to the association’s Open Gateway API initiative, launched at last year’s Mobile World Congress, which aims to unlock the “full potential of 5G networks” through commercialized APIs.
GSMA director general Mats Granryd welcomed the progress made in the first 12 months, noting that the industry has “started to build a unified ecosystem and unlock the full potential of 5G networks”.
The association explained that, since the program’s launch, operators and partners, including AWS, Infobip, Microsoft, Nokia and Ericsson Vonage, have marketed 94 developer APIs in 21 markets around the world.
